What`s the difference?

Compare:

Present continuous
- We use the continuous form for actions and happenings that have started but not finished (A ação não terminou)

Examples:
- Please, don’t make so much noise. I’m trying to study (not I try) (por favor, não faça muito barulho. Estou tentando estudar)
- The population of the world is increasing very fast (not is increase)(a população no mundo está crescendo rapidamente)

- Am/is/are + ing is the present continuous:
- I am studying
- He/she/it is running
- We/you/they are working

The following verbs are not normally used in the present continuous (Os verbos abaixo não são normalmente utilizados na forma contínua:
Like, Love, hate, want, need, prefer, know, suppose, mean, understand, believe, remember, belong, fit, consist, seem.

Present Simple
- We use the simple form for things in general or things that happen repeatedly (Usamos a forma simples para coisas em geral ou coisas que ocorrem repetidamente)
Examples:
- I usually go to work by car (Eu geralmente vou trabalhar de carro)
- Maria speaks English very well. (Maria fala Inglês muito bem)

Vamos dar continuidade ao questionamento de “quando” usar o presente contínuo ou presente simples. E' importante que você tente compreender o que está escrito em inglês. Posteriormente, você poderá consultar a tradução para o português, se surgir uma eventual dúvida.

Present continuous

Comments 1:

- We use the present continuous when we talk about changes happening around now, especially with these verbs:
get, change, become, increase, fall, rise, grow, improve, begin, start

Example: Is your English getting better?

Comments 2:

- We use the present continuous for temporary situations:
Example: I`m living with some friends until I find a place of my own


Present simple

Comments 1:
- We use the present simple to say how often we do things:

Examples:
- Mauricio doesn’t drink coffee very often
- How often do you go to the dentist?

Comments 2:
I recommend, I suggest, I apologise, I promise, I advise, I insist, I agree, I refuse, and others are used in the present simple

Examples:
- The new restaurant is very good. I recommend it.
- What do you suggest I do?
- I apologise for what I did. It won`t happen again

Comments 3:
- We use the present simple to permament situations:

Example:
- Mauricio isn`t lazy. He works hard most of the time

Comments 4:
- When think means "believe" or have "an opinion", we do not use the present continuous

Examples:
- I think Maria is Canadian, but I am not sure.
- What do you think about this book?


In Portuguese

Presente contínuo

Obs 1:
- Nós usamos o presente contínuo quando falamos de mudanças que ocorrem no momento, principalmente com esses verbos:

receber/obter/conseguir, mudar, tornar-se/transformar-se, aumentar, cair, subir, crescer, melhorar, começar, iniciar

Exemplo: Seu Inglês está melhorando?

Obs 2:
- Nos usamos o presente contínuo para situações temporárias:
Exemplo:
- Estou morando com alguns amigos até eu encontrar um lugar pra mim.


Presente simples
- Usamos o presente simples para dizer com que freqüência nós fazemos as coisas:

Exemplos:
- Mauricio não toma café com muita frequência
- Com que frequência você vai ao dentista?

Obs 2:
Eu recomendo, Eu sugiro, Eu peço desculpa, Eu prometo, Eu aconselho, Eu insisto, Eu concordo, Eu me recuso, dentre outros são usados no presente simples


Exemplos:
- O novo restaurante é muito bom. Eu recomendo.
- Eu peço desculpa pelo que fiz. Não acontecerá novamente.

Obs 3:
- Usamos o presente simples para situações permanentes:

Exemplo:
- Mauricio não é preguiçoso. Ele trabalha arduamente a maior parte do tempo.

Obs 4:
- Quando pensar/achar significa "acreditar" ou ter "uma opinião", não devemos usar o presente contínuo.

Exemplos:
- Creio que a Maria é canadense, mas não tenho certeza.
- O que você acha deste livro?
