What`s the difference?
Compare:
Present continuous
- We use the continuous form for actions and happenings that have started but not finished (A ação não terminou)
Examples:
- Please, don’t make so much noise. I’m trying to study (not I try) (por favor, não faça muito barulho. Estou tentando estudar)
- The population of the world is increasing very fast (not is increase)(a população no mundo está crescendo rapidamente)

The following verbs are not normally used in the present continuous (Os verbos abaixo não são normalmente utilizados na forma contínua:
Like, Love, hate, want, need, prefer, know, suppose, mean, understand, believe, remember, belong, fit, consist, seem.
Present Simple
- We use the simple form for things in general or things that happen repeatedly (Usamos a forma simples para coisas em geral ou coisas que ocorrem repetidamente)
Examples:
- I usually go to work by car (Eu geralmente vou trabalhar de carro)
- Maria speaks English very well. (Maria fala Inglês muito bem)
