Do you worry about whether to use FOR or TO? Here is a little rule that might help.
If something is going to TRAVEL, then use TO.
If something is to BENEFIT someone, use FOR.
For example:
He wanted to write a letter TO his mother. He broke his arm, so I wrote the letter FOR him.
Next week is Amanda's birthday. I bought a present FOR her today. When I see her at her party, I'll give it TO her.
Sometimes FOR and TO are both OK
Example:
He explained TO me how the machine worked (the explanation TRAVELLED to me).
He explained FOR me how the machine worked (the explanation BENEFITED me. In fact, maybe he was talking TO someone else when he explained it, but he permitted me to listen)
