Sobre 'only' e 'just'

Rick me pediu para falar sobre only e just. Elas pode ser adjetivos ou adverbios. Quando elas são adverbios, há alguma confusão.

Only and Just as adverbs

Na verdade elas são quase intercambiáveis, e muitas vezes a gente pode usar qualquer uma, mas há uma diferença sutil.

"Why are you going out now when the movie is starting?" "I am just going to buy some snacks"
"Why are you going out and leaving me alone?" "I am only going to buy some milk"

A intenção de uma pessoa que usou estas palavras foi acalmar alguém. A diferença:

Com 'just', alguém se preocupa sobre tempo. 'Just' sugere que a pessoa pretende terminar a ação rapidamente ou em breve.

Com 'only', alguém se preocupa sobre a ação. 'Only' acalma alguém sobre qual ação será fazer, e tempo é menos importante.

'Just' descreve algo que acontece de repente ou sem adiamento, mas 'only' não faz isso:

Just then I realised that we had no milk = de repente me dei conta ...
Only then I realised that we had no milk = depois algo aconteceu me dei conta ...

Just make the coffee! = Faça o café agora sem mais adiamento!
Only make the coffee! = Faça o cafe, mas não faça nada ademais!

"Where are you?" "I am just around the corner" (and I'll arrive soon)
"Where are you?" "I am only around the corner" (so you can come and meet me if you want. It is not far)

Se não houver nenhuma questão de tempo, haverá menos diferências entre as duas.

At the shop, they only had red hats
At the shop, they just had red hats

"Do you have children?" "Only two."
"Do you have children?" "Just two."

Várias expressões

We were very late! The train had started to move and we jumped aboard. We only just made it!
'Only just' = apenas

Just you wait! = Você vai ver (Vou vingar!)
(Também aqui dizemos "You'll keep". 'to keep' aqui significa 'não decompor-se', como comidas. A gente pretende dizer que a lembrança do evento não vai se decompor, e a oportunidade para vingar vai chegar um dia.)

Just you wait and see = Vou provar que eu tenho certeza.

Just now he told me that you have a dog = só um momento antes
Just then he told me that you have a dog = só um momento antes

Just now I am busy but you can come back in five minutes = Neste momento agora estou ...
