Weddings in Wales: Couple hit it off on training course

If you tied the knot like Sarah-Jayne and Simon we'd love to share in your celebrations.

To take part, just fill in the simple form at the end of this story. And if you're from the South Wales Echo area, you will be featured in our newspaper, too.

It doesn't matter where you married, as long as one of you is Welsh or you live in Wales.

This week's couple live in Dowlais:

The couple

SARAH-JAYNE THOMAS (nee Williams), 26, a student social worker from Pant, Merthyr Tydfil and SIMON THOMAS, 34, a call centre team leader also from Pant. They now live together in Dowlais.

How they met

They couple met while working in a T-Mobile call centre in April, 2008.

Sarah-Jayne said: “Simon was a trainer for a course I was sent on with my team. My friend and I both liked the look of him so we had a little competition to see who could fit the most innuendo into the session.

“Simon was very professional and didn’t rise to the occasion at all. About two weeks later I had a message from him on MySpace asking me if I wanted to go for a coffee with him and the rest is history.”

The venue

Sarah-Jayne and Simon were married in Christ Church in Pant and had their reception afterwards at the Mercure Holland Hotel in Cardiff on March 1, 2014.

The proposal

Sarah-Jayne said the proposal was “very spontaneous”.

She said: “We were walking home from the pub about two weeks before Christmas in 2009.

It was snowing and he just asked if I would marry him. I didn’t think he was serious but the next morning he said he was. We went out for lunch to celebrate and that was it really.”

Simon bought Sarah-Jayne a white gold engagement ring with three diamonds.

The wedding

Sarah-Jayne’s wedding dress was one of the first she tried on.

She said: “I didn’t want anything long because I knew I would trip over it.

My dress also had to go with my shoes. Simon had bought me them for Christmas and I knew they were the ones.

”The shoes were by Irregular Choice, one of Sarah-Jayne’s favourite brands. She wore a short wedding dress with lace sleeves and a veil.

The couple had a Welsh-themed wedding. Her bouquet was made of white daffodils with orange centres. Her four bridesmaids wore orange dresses.

Simon wore a black three-piece with an orange tie and socks. Their three-tier wedding cake was adorned with orange ribbons and had a Welsh flag and daffodils on the top.

Their first dance was to a mix of Goo Goo Dolls’ Iris and David Guetta’s Titanium to which they surprised their guests with a choreographed dance.

Sarah-Jayne said the highlight of her day was when Simon presented her with a Welsh Rugby shirt.

Sam Warbuton had been invited but was in lock-down ahead of the Six Nations and couldn’t attend. He signed the couple’s shirts when he met them after the wedding.

The honeymoon

They went to visit Sarah-Jayne’s mother in Cyprus for a week in April and plan to go on a tour of Italy in 2016.
